This index of Ontario was compiled from the following Surrogate Court sources: estate files, estate filings, registers, and guardianship files.

"This index covers the period 1793-1858. In the case of York County (to 1863) and Norfolk County (to 1869), the alphabetical organization of these files made a cut-off date of 1858 unrealistic. As well, entries for some counties continue into 1859: each county's cut-off date depends on when the county began to notify the Surrogate Clerk of Ontario of applications for probate and administration."

To find the probate papers in this library, search the catalog under the desired county under "Probate records" for records of the county surrogate courts.
