Transcript by Jane McMillin Breckner from a handwritten transcript of of the original diary made by John Thornton Wrath in 1895. The diary was then in possession of Nancy's ninth and youngest child, Minerva Jane Clarke Frazier, who resided in Jefferson City, Missouri.

"The following material was originally written by Nancy (Riley) Clarke Salt (1786-1857) at her home in Clermont County, Ohio, between 1849 and her death.... The 'diary' is actually a family history, covering much of Nancy's life in Surry County, North Carolina, their move to Kentucky in the late 1790s, and their moved to Clemont County in 1806. She also included material on the family of her mother-in-law, Eleanor (Reader) Clarke, who lived with Houton and Nacy (Riley) Clarke from their marriage in 1806 until Eleanor's death in 1818...."

Garrard Riley, a Revolutionary War soldier, was born in 1766 in Montrgomery County, Maryland, the son of Ninian Riley (1726-1814). His family migrated to Surry County, North Carolina, in 1783. He married Frances Wright in 1786. They had six children. The family migrated to Kenucky in 1796 and to Clemont County, Ohio, in 1806. His oldest daughter, Nancy Riley (1786-1857), married Houton Clarke of Bethel, Ohio, in 1806.

Stephen Clarke (1738-1813?), son of John Clarke of Yorkshire, married Eleanor Reader, daughter of Robert Reader (1672-1777) of Yorkshire, in 1764. They had five sons, the first three born in Yorkshire. The family immigrated to America in 1773 and settled in Mecklenburg, Virginia. Their son, Houton Clarke (ca. 1766-1835), his brother, Abner, and their mother migrated to Madison County, Kentucky in 1787. He and his mother moved to Clermont County, Ohio, in 1794. He married Nancy Riley near Bethel, Ohio, in 1806. They had nine children, 1807-1824. Nancy Riley Clarke married 2) John Salt in 1846. She died at Bethel, Ohio, in 1857.
