The Islands of St. Christopher (now known as St. Kitts) and Nevis, which formed part of the Leeward Islands Federation from 1871 to 1956, and part of the Federation of the West Indies from 1958 to 1962, gained "association" status with Great Britain in 1967 and became fully independent in 1983.

The Island of Anguilla was administered as part of the Leeward Islands until 1825, thereafter being incorporated in the colony of St. Christopher (St. Kitts)-Nevis. In 1967 Anguilla seceded from its association with St. Kitts-Nevis and in 1969 became a separate dependency of Great Britain.
