Matthew French was born ca. 1735 in Westmoreland County, Virginia, the son of John and Martha French. He married Sarah Payne of Culpepper County, Virginia. They had six children. The family migrated across the Alleghanies into New River Valley and settled on Wolf Creek, Giles County, Virginia, in 1775. Matthew and his oldest son, John, fought in the Revolutionary War. He died in Giles County, Virginia, in 1814. Descendants listed lived in Virginia, West Virginia, Texas, and elsewhere.

Includes the Williamson and other related families.
