Land warrants are documents issued at local land offices to purchasers of public lands. When these warrants are surrendered, the buyers are issued conveyances (deeds). The land warrants (and other miscellaneous records) are organized by file numbers in alphabetical sequences of counties. Some of the counties are now Tennessee counties. These records are in packets. The cover of each packet has been filmed before its contents as a kind of introduction. On each packet cover are spaces for the following information: file number, county, purchaser's name(s), number of acres, grant number, date issued, entry number, date entered, book number, page number & location.

The Western, Middle & Eastern districts of Tennessee, found in at least one of the indexes, are after Davidson County, Tennessee in the film notes.

Includes the following as filmed: 1) unindexed western country land documents (now Tennessee) in alphabetical order by name, ca. 1783; 2) the indexes; 3) warrants and other miscellaneous records.

The 6th set of index cards (6) are organized alphabetically by county (listed in parentheses) then alphabetically (not perfect alphabetical order, however) by each person's name. Rather than include the purchaser's names with all of the counties together, however, the counties are repeated over & over for each letter of the alphabet. Surnames (last names) beginning with "A", for example, are together for all related counties, then the surnames beginning with "B" are together for all related counties, etc.

There are 6 sets of name index cards in the film notes. The key to finding the related packets are the file numbers found at the top-right corner of each card. Other information found on the cards include the: county, grant number, location, number of acres, date issued, book and page numbers.

Microfilm of originals in the North Carolina State Archives in Raleigh, North Carolina.

The numbering of warrants starts over again for some counties.
