Edwin Spain (1794-1873), son of Joshua and Elizabeth Spain, was born in Dinwiddie County, Virginia. He married 1818 in Champaign County, Ohio, Elizabeth Crowder (1801-1885), daughter of Hurburt and Martha Crowder. Both are buried in Peoria Cemetery, Richland Township, Mahaska County, Iowa. They were parents of eleven children born in Ohio. Edwin came to Ohio in 1805 from Virginia. In 1854 he moved with his family from Ohio to Mahaska County, Iowa living in Peoria near New Sharon, Iowa. The earliest known ancestor, Capt. John Spain Sr. (ca. 1721/30-1798), was born in Dinwiddie County, Virginia, where he also died.
