Jacob Eschbach Yoder was born in 1838 in Gilbertsville, Pennsylvania, to Jacob Maurer and Anna Eschbach Yoder. In 1866 he became a teacher in the Freedmen's Bureau school in Lynchburg, Virginia. He married a fellow teacher, Anna Whitaker, in 1871. They had 7 children. Jacob later became an administrator of Lynchburg's black schools. He died in 1905.

Contains a short biography of Jacob E. Yoder, description of the Yoder collection at the Library of Virginia, and transcription of two diaries (1866-1867, 1869-1870).
