Notes

Family history of Robert, Brooks, Tompkins, and Carter families. Pierre Robert (b. ca. 1656) was the first Huguenot minister to come to South Carolina in 1686. The Brooks family had several members who served in Congress and many in the military. The common ancestor of the Tompkins family was Captain Stephen Tompkins who came to Virginia in 1740, and married a cousin of Benjamin Franklin. The Carter family is descended from William Carter of Patrick County, Virginia.
