William Carroll Thomas was born ca. 1819 in Sevier County, Tennessee. He married Mary (Polly) Duggan, the daughter of Daniel Duggan, Jr., and Mary (Polly) McMahan. They had 7 children. William died in either 1863 or 1864 while serving during the Civil War. His wife Mary remarried in 1888 to Rev. John Russell. She died in 1903. Descendants lived in Tennessee, Oklahoma, Texas, Missouri, Ohio, and elsewhere.

Related families were Atchley, Dunlap, Finchum, Henegar, Hurst, McGaha, Noonkesser, Raines, Roberts, Seaton, Sims, Worth, and others.
