John Norman Mason (1883-1975) was born in Campbell County, Virginia, the son of Albert Preston Mason (1850-1911) and Lelia Augusta Coock Harvey Mason (d. 1894). Besse Locher Hout (1888-1979) was born at Shepherdstown, West Virginia, the daughter of Harry Lee Hout (1883-1931) and Sarah Frances Lemen Hout (1863-1946). She was attending the Southern Seminary at Buena Vista, Virginia, when she eloped to Hagerstown, Maryland, with John Norman Mason. They settled at Roanoke, Virginia. They had five children, 1908-1918. John Norman and Besse Hout Mason are buried in Evergreen Cemetery, Roaoke, Virginia. Descendants lived in Virginia and elsewhere.

Includes the McCown and other related families.

Ancestors include: John Mason (d. ca. 1796) of Campbell County, Virginia -- Robert Lemen (fl. 1656) of Scotland and Northern Ireland; and his son, Nicholas Lemen (fl. 1685-1708) of Northern Ireland and Virginia -- Johann Georg Haudt/John George Hout (1725-1786) of Germany and Virginia.
