Index of baptisms of the Roman Catholic Church in Hungary. Church records are the property of the state and are stored in the archives of the various Hungarian counties under direction of the National Archives of Hungary [Országos Leveltár] in Budapest. Included in this collection are some baptism records from localities which historically belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary, but because of changing political borders now belong to other countries. Records may appear in Hungarian, Latin and German. This collection is 95% complete. Additional records will be added as they are completed.

What is in This Collection?

This collection includes baptism/christening records from 1636 to 1895. The text of these records varies among Latin, Hungarian, and German. Earlier records hold less information than more contemporary records. Church records were official records and are some of the most reliable sources of information available for genealogical research in Hungary. They are the property of the state and are stored in the archives of the various Hungarian counties of the National Archives of Hungary (Magyar Nemzeti Levéltár) in Budapest.
