Russia, Tula, Poll Tax Census (Revision Lists), 1758-1895

What is in This Collection?

This collection will include records from 1758-1895. In 1724 Peter I introduced the poll tax, which was forced on the entire male population. A census of the population was made before the poll tax was conducted as a guide for payment of the tax. High ranking, educated, and professional men were exempt from the poll tax and the census. Their households cannot then be found in the collection. Revision lists recorded revised or updated information between censuses of the taxpaying population. The last revision lists were recorded in 1858.

The collection includes images of family lists for the tax-paying population (about 95% of the population) conducted primarily in the years 1782, 1795, 1811, 1816, 1833-1834, 1850-1851, and 1857-1858. Some outlying years are included. Localities reflect the places that existed during the period of the Russian Empire since the records were created at that time.
