What is in This Collection?

This is an every-name index to the 1870 census of Denmark. This index was created by MyHeritage from images provided by the National Archives of Denmark. The census was taken on the first of February. The census was taken on the first of February and included Denmark, Faeroe Islands, Greenland and the Danish West Indies. The enumeration for Denmark was divided into four sections: Copenhagen city, other cities, rural areas and trade centers (handelsplads). This publication includes only Denmark. The localities included in the Handelsplads section are:

What Can These Records Tell Me?

This census contained two different schedules. The first is for persons present at their residence on the date of the enumeration, and a second, abbreviated schedule for persons temporarily absent. The census forms contain the following information.

Byernes eller Stedernes Navne, med Anførsel af Gaarde, Huse, o.s.v.	Town's or place's name with reference of farms, houses, etc.
Familiernes Antal	Number of families
Personernes Løbenummer	The person's consecutive number
Samtlige Personers fulde Navne (Udøbte Børn anføres som "Udøbt Drengebarn" eller "Udøbt Pigegebarn")	All persons' full names (Unbaptized children listed as unbaptized boys or unbaptized girls)
Kjøn - Mandkjøn (M) eller Kvindekjøn (K)	Sex - Male (M) or Female (F)
Alder - Alderen anføres med det fyldte Aar, men for Børn der ikke have fyldt 1 Aar, anføres "Under 1 Aar"	Age - Age reported as at last birthday, but for children who have not reached their first birthday, reported as "under 1 year"
Ægteskabelig Stilling - Ugift (U), Gift (G), Fraskilt (F), Enkemand eller Enke (E)	Marital Status - Unmarried (U), Married (G), Divorced (F), Widower or widow (E)
Troesbekjendelsen	Religion
Fødested - nemlig Kjøbstadens eller Sognets og Amtets Navn og for de i Bilandene og i Colonierne Fødte samt for Udlandinge Landet hvor de ere fødte	Birthplace - namely the city or in the country the parish and county's name and for foreigners and those born in the dependency and in the colonies where they are born.
Stilling i Familien - Huusfader, Huusmoder, Børn, Slægtninge, Tjenestetyende, Logerende, o.s.v.	Position in the family - Head of house, housewife, children, relative, servant, lodgers, etc.
Titel, Embede, Forretning, Næringsvei eller av hvilket Erhverv de leve som Hovedperson eller Medhjælper, (Forvalter, Svend eller Dreng o.s.v.) eller om de forsørges af Fattigvæsenet	Title, position, business, occupation, or from what means they live as a main person or assistant (manager, apprentice, or farmhand, etc) or wheter provided for by the Poor Commission
Forstanden Berøvet / Fra Fødselen / Fra et senere Tidspunkt	Robbed of intelligence / From birth / From a latter time
