What is in This Collection?

The Post Office Annual Directory was first published in 1832 by Alexander Thom, who also published Thom's Irish Almanac beginning in 1844. In the 1850s the name of the Post Office directory was changed to The Post Office Dublin Directory and Calendar.

The directory contains a list of the nobility, gentry, merchants, traders; barristers, attorneys, solicitors; physicians, surgeons, apothecaries; ministers. It also includes postal regulations, rates, names of towns with post offices, and schedules for mail and stage coaches, and canal boats. It also includes a list of banks, stock exchanges, pawnbrokers, union workhouses, charities, churches, and hospitals.
