What is in This Collection?

This collection enumerates the people living in the Marylebone area of London on 28 May, 1821 and 30 June, 1831. The censuses were enumerated by street and house number. Each entry gives the surname of the head of household, the number of families living in each house, and statistical information about the inhabitants.

Marylebone grew up around the parish church of St Mary’s, which was built along the small stream Tyburn (or Tybourne). The parish became known as St Mary’s on the Bourne. However, some would pronounce it with a French flourish as St Mary la Bourne, which is how the area became known as Marylebone.

The 1831 census include a tally of persons engaged in various trades. There were three occupations where over one thousand persons were engaged. They were: carpenters, 1,367; shoe and bookmakers or menders, 1,583; and tailors, 1,801.
