What is in This Collection?

This collection includes records of men who were applying for exemption from the Military Service Act which required able-bodied men between the ages of 19 and 41 to be conscripted for military service. Men serving in exempt and essential occupations were exempted or reserved for alternative service. Men could also be excused from service based on illness, hardship, potential damage to their business which would cause hardship to their family or negatively affect the war effort, or on the basis of being a conscientious objector. These are part of record series DC45 held by the Portsmouth History Centre and Records Office.
