Åkær is first named in 1386 when Nicolaus Rostrup gave testimony that the property where "Akyer" was built belonged to him along with his brothers and sisters. The property was passed down to them from their mother, Kristine Lauridsatter, who inherited it from her father, Laurids Trogotsen. From 1400 through 1661 the estate was owned first by the Bishop of Århus, and then by Crown. In 1661 it was sold to the von Gersdorff family. In 1674 Frederik von Gersdorff sold the estate to his father-in-law, Jørgen Bielke. In 1697 Bendix Lassen of Århus purchased the estate. After his death his widow, Hedevig Margrethe Bornemann married Matthias Rosenørn. Rosenørn died in 1725, and his son Henrik assumed ownership. Henrik died in 1732, and the estate reverted to his step-mother.
Ownership of the estate remained in the family in 1749 when the daughter of Hedevig Margrethe Bornemann and Matthias Rosenørn, Benedicte Antoinette Rosenørn married Thøger de Lasson who also owned Dybvad estate in Gosmer parish. Thøger and Benedicte's daughter, Anne de Lasson married Frederik Christian Tønne von Lüttichau. They owned the property until 1793 when it was sold to Georg Werner August Dietrich von Münster-Meinhövel. He began selling away parts of the estate until 1802 when they were purchased by Heinrich von Reventlow and Andreas Hartvig Berthold Frederik Bernstorff. In 1857 Peter Johannes de Neergaard purchased the estate and it remained in this family until 1990.
