Style Guide Discussions

  • What is our stand on family organization pages in the Wiki?  I found this one while patrolling this morning.  Matthia.  The contributor has responded on the talk page.  Since we are inviting genealogy societies now, do family organizations fit in that mode?  The guidelines are a little vague on this one.Lynda
  • These pages are encouraged.  Other pages like this have been put in Societies category.  Purposes page could be amended to include Societies and Family Organizations.
  • Pages could be adopted.

Improve the Wiki

  • I've notice that more and more people are using the {{information}} template to add details about images including giving credit to the original author (attribution) and detailing the license under which it is being used. This is great and this provides better documentation than the wiki has had in the past for the images that are being used. I would like to encourage some best practise when completing the template. These are included in the template documentation (but who reads that!).
    • Source - this should only state own work if the person who uploads the image is the author. In the Research Wiki an original author may submit a file but some else upload it. If this is the case the person uploading it should explain the source is the work of the submitter and include a link to their user page in the Author section. Otherwise the source statement should be used to link to where the image was found/downloaded from. Plain text saying Wikipedia or WikiCommons helps, but only a tiny bit. Much better to include a direct link. --Steve (talk| contribs) 19:27, 3 November 2011 (UTC)This should be in the Help information for uploading images.  Steve will send information to Rorie to be added with new system for uploading images. Some old images don't have an author and may show as "unknown".  We need to be sure that uploaders know what each field calls for. The template may need to be updated to show who submitted the image.
