A Sogn or in some instances called Sokn (parish) is usually connected to a congregation and has a church (parish church) where the congregation meets. It usually refers to an area where a church operates and is the smallest jurisdiction within Den Norske Kirke (The church of Norway). There used to be one or more sogn under the jurisdiction of a prestegjeld (clerical district). From 2004 the jurisdiction prestegjeld became extinct and from then on each sogn became its own jurisdiction.

Each parish has a Menighetsråd (congregation counsel) or Soknåd (parish counsel). The parish is an arm in the church counsel structure.

The term sogn is a geographical administration, while the term menighet (congregation) is fellowship of “christen mankind”. Both terms falls under the Norwegian Lutheran Church of Norway.
