FamilySearch This article describes the services and resources available at a Family History Center, a branch facility of the Family History Library.


Townsend is a city of about 2000 people located on the Missouri River in the southwest corner of the state. Townsend is the county seat of Broadwater County and lies about 35 miles southeast of the capital, Helena. Canyon Ferry Lake is about 5 miles north of town.

The Family History Center is located inside of the Townsend Ward Meetinghouse. The entrance is on the northwest corner of the building, There is ample parking, including reserved handicap spots.

  • FHC Portal This center has access to the Family History Center Portal page which gives free access in the center to premium family history software and websites that generally charge for subscriptions (e.g., Ancestry.com, findmypast.com, MyHeritage.com).
