The United Synagogue, which was originally an organization representing the Ashkenazi Jews of London, was established by an Act of Parliament in 1870. Today, it represents over 60 Orthodox Jewish Communities in the British Isles, which makes it the largest such group in all of Europe. It is governed by an elected council which represents the various communities. In religious or ritual matters, it is under the jurisdiction of the Chief Rabbi.

The Chief Rabbi’s

1845 – 1890 Nathan Marcus Adler
1890 – 1913 Herman Marcus Adler
1913 – 1948 Joseph Herman Hertz
1948 – 1967 Israel Brodie
1967 – 1991 Immanuel Jakobovits
1991 to present Jonathan Sacks

Beginning in the late 1860’s, Nathan Marcus Adler worked to bring together the United Synagogue. The United Synagogue was formed by the merging of the three City of London Synagogues - the Great Synagogue, the New Synagogue and the Hambro Synagogue, along with their smaller branch synagogues , the Great Portland Street synagogue and the Bayswater Synagogue.
