England

Background

The United Synagogue, which was originally an organization representing the Ashkenazi Jews of London, was established by an Act of Parliament in 1870. Today, it represents over 60 Orthodox Jewish Communities in the British Isles, which makes it the largest such group in all of Europe. It is governed by an elected council which represents the various communities. In religious or ritual matters, it is under the jurisdiction of the Chief Rabbi.
