My name is Carol Kostakos Petranek, and I am researching my Greek ancestors who are from villages around Sparta: Agios Ioannis (St. Johns), and Mystras. I have had some success obtaining records from the G.A.K. (Greek Archives) in Sparta -- specifically, Male Registers (Mitroon Arrenon) and Town Registers (similar to U.S. census records). The Greek Orthodox Church Diocese in the Peloponnese is also very helpful, but a researcher must have specific names and dates to obtain marriage records.
My grandparents are:
Paternal line: John Andrew Kostakos born 1879 in Agios Ioannis, and Hariklia Aridas born 1894 in Agios Ioannis.
Maternal line: Louis Papagiannakos (Pappas) born 1873 in Agios Ioannis; and Angelina Eftaxas/Eftaxias born 1896 in Mystras.
All of my grandparents emigrated in the early 1900's. My paternal line settled in Brooklyn, New York and my maternal line lived in Hoboken, New Jersey.
I am most interested in connecting with anyone whose ancestors are from the Peloponnese, especially Sparta and Mani. I am anxiously awaiting the digitization of records from these areas.
