  • Dictionary of Canadian Biography, 14 volumes [to date] (Toronto: University of Toronto Press; Québec City, Les Presses de l’université Laval, c. 1966).
  • Directory of Associations in Canada/répertoire des associations du Canada (Toronto: University of Toronto Press, 1973-c. 1997) also Associations Canada: an encyclopedic directory/un répertoire encyclopedique (Toronto: Canadian Almanac and Directory Pub. Co., 1991).
  • Directory of Canadian Archives (Ottawa: Canadian Council of Archives, 1990) Current version is on the internet.
  • The Encyclopedia of Canada, genl. ed., W. Stewart Wallace (Toronto: University Associates of Canada, 6 volumes, 1935-37; registered edition 1940; 2nd edition 1948) Edited by a noted historian just before World War II, now an invaluable guide to the recent past. Town and city entries give the newspapers, major industries, and the railroads that served each community. References are to Encyclopedia of Canada plus the entry topic. Most libraries will have a copy, but by now it is probably in the stacks.
  • The Fitzhenry and Whiteside Book of Canadian Facts and Dates, compiled by Jay Myers, revised by L. Hoffman and F. Sutherland (Richmond Hill, Ontario: Fitzhenry and Whiteside, 1991).
  • The Oxford Companion to Canadian History and Literature, editor Norah Story (Toronto, London, New York: Oxford University Press, 1967) Contains detailed accounts of most Canadian political divisions and places.

  • Traité de généalogie (Montréal: les Presses de l’Université de Montréal, 1991). If you can read French, this book has a very helpful section on the language and formulas of notarial contracts.
