Van Buren is a former large plantation, now a smaller town in northeast Aroostook County. Before 1843 it was known as Township Letter M R2 WELS. The much larger Van Buren Plantation was first organized in 1843 and described as parallel to the St. John River for six miles. Since then it has been reduced by three set-offs,

before Van Buren became a town in 1881. Van Buren annexed part of Hamlin in 1907.[4] [5]
