7 March 1851: Created by the Act of the New Jersey Legislature

Named for General Garret D. Wall, commander of a Trenton volunteer company during the War of 1812.

May 1884: Borough of North Spring Lake set off. (It was dissolved when it was absorbed by Borough of Spring Lake.)

9 March 1885: Borough of Ocean Beach set off. (now Belmar)

30 December 1887: Borough of Manasquan set off.

14 March 1892: Borough of Spring Lake set off.

19 March 1917: Borough of Sea Girt set off.

10 April 1919: Borough of Brielle set off.

12 March 1924: Borough of South Belmar set off. (now Lake Como)

19 March 1927: Borough of Spring Lake Heights set off.

Allenwood and West Belmar are census-designated areas of unincorporated portion of the township.
