Brief History

Also known as Thompson's Rifle Battallion.



Company A - Captain James Chambers, Captain James Grier - raised in Cumberland County (present-day Franklin County)
Company B - Captain Robert Cluggage - raised in Bedford County
Company C - Captain Michael Doudle (or Doudel), Captain Henry Miller - raised in York County (including present-day Adams County)
Company D - Captain William Hendricks - raised in Cumberland County
Company E - Captain John Lowdon - raised primarily in Northumberland County (also recruited in present-day Union County)
Company F - Captain Abraham Miller, Captain Charles Craig - recruited in Northampton County
Company G - Captain George Nagel, Captain Morgan Conner, 1st Lieutenant David Harris - raised at Reading, Berks County
Company H - Captain James Ross - raised in Lancaster County
Company I - Captain Matthew Smith - raised in Lancaster County (present-day Dauphin County)

Five companies were composed mainly of Scots-Irish men. Two companies recruited many Germans from Berks and Northampton counties.
