Alturas County, Idaho was created 4 February 1863 from the Idaho Territory. Parts were taken to create [[Custer_County,_Idaho|Custer]] 8 January 1881 and [[Elmore_County,_Idaho|Elmore]] County 7 February 1889, then the county was dissolved and split into [[Blaine_County,_Idaho|Blaine]] and [[Lincoln_County,_Idaho|Lincoln]] counties 5 March 1895 and 18 March 1895 respectively ito circumvent a recent state supreme court decision striking down an earlier county reorganization.
