Ancaster St Martin is an Ancient Parish. The village of Ancaster occupies the site of the former Roman town of Causennae which was formed on the junction of the Roman roads of Ermine Street and King Street (the Roman road from Ailsworth to Ancaster via Bourne).
The Parish church dedication to St Martin is common on former Roman occupied sites in Britain. Martin was a former Roman soldier who converted to Christianity and went on to be Bishop of Tours.
