Beaufort District, South Carolina
In 1785 four counties were formed within Beaufort District: Granville (1785), Hilton, Lincoln, and Shrewsbury. These counties never became functional, and were abolished in 1798. They were counties in name only. See the 1785 South Carolina Map.
In 1800, South Carolina abolished administrative districts and went with the county concept, However they called the counties, districts until 1868, after the Civil War.
