Originally this area was known as Township No. 1 East of Penobscot River, Livermore Survey (T1 EPR LS) or Township No. 1 West of Union River.[1] Buckstown existed as a plantation before it was incorporated as the town of Buckstown in 1792.[2] The name was changed to Bucksport in 1817.[3]

Bucksport land was set off to Orrington (now Penobscot County) in 1816; to Brewer (now Penobscot County) in 1841, again to Orrington in 1850, and to Dedham in 1909. Moreover, Verona Island was once part of Bucksport.[1]
