Parent County

1849 Butler County was created 27 February 1849 from Wayne County. It is named after former U.S. Representative William O. Butler (D-Kentucky). County seat: Poplar Bluff [3]

Taxes were levied on free white males over 21 and slaves aged 21 to 60. These persons are referred to as "polls."
