Denbigh (Welsh: Dinbych) is a town, community and ecclesiastical parish in Denbighshire, Wales. Prior to 1888, it was the county town of Denbighshire but was later replaced by Ruthin.

Before 1974 the town was in the historic county of Denbighshire and, between 1874 and 1996 in the County of Clwyd. In 1996 it became part of the modern county of Denbighshire.

History

"DENBIGH,a borough, market town, and parish, having exclusive jurisdiction, locally in the hundred of Isaled, county of Denbigh (of which it is the ancient shire town); 218 miles (N.W.) from London, on the road from Ruthin to St. Asaph, containing 3786 inhabitants. ... Its presnt nams is a modernization of the Welsh designation Dinbech, signifying a small hill...
