St Peter's Church, Finsthwaite Lancashire.jpeg

Chapelries History

Finsthwaite St Peter was created a chapel of ease in 1724 from Colton, Lancashire Ecclesiastical Parish.

Finsthwaite is a small village in the South Lakeland District, since 1974 in the county of Cumbria. It is located near the Furness Fells and Lake Windermere.

The present church was a replacement built in 1873-4, to a design by Paley and Austin, in slate and sandstone.

"FINSTHWAITE, a parochial chapelry, in the parish of Coulton, union of Ulverston, hundred of Lonsdale north of the Sands, N. division of the county of Lancaster, 8½ miles northeast by north from Ulverston.[1] The chapel, dedicated to St. Peter, was consecrated and made parochial in 1725", and as a parochial chapelry, was allowed to perform marriages.
