Background

The railroad built from 1868 and 1869 by the Union Pacific and the Central Pacific railroad companies has become known as the First Transcontinental Railroad. It ran between Omaha, Nebraska, on the east and Sacramento, California, on the west. The two lines met and a connecting spike was driven at Pronontory Point, Utah, on May 10, 1869.
