1) Greene County was established in 1799 from Glasgow County when Glasgow changed its name to Greene. Courthouse fire of 1876 destroyed many court records and all land records. County seat: Greene Court House (1799-1811); Snow Hill (1811-present). 2) Greene County now in Tennessee, created in 1783. Greenville became the county seat. This was a part of the Territory ceded by North Carolina in 1789 to the Federal government.
