Idaho Naturalization and Citizenship
Naturalization records have usually been filed with the clerk of the U.S. District Court in each county courthouse. The records of some counties are in neighboring counties. The Idaho Supreme Court in Boise has some records from 1890.
In 1906 the Immigration and Naturalization Service (now United States Citizenship and Immigration Services) was created, forms were standardized and each court sent duplicate copies of their records to the INS. To access these records, download a FOIA (Freedom of Information Act) form from www.uscis.gov, fill it out and send it to the address listed on the form.
The Idaho State Historical Society Public Archives and Research Library has created an index to naturalization records that includes the following information:
- Last name
- Given name
- Country of nativity
- Type of record
When a name in the index is listed more than once, possibly more than one kind of citizenship record exists for that individual.
Instructions for obtaining a copy of the original record are given on the website. The request may be made by mail, e-mail or telephone. There are photocopy and research fees for this service. Check the Family History Library Catalog to determine if the record is also in the library holdings.
