Description

The County was named for Twin Lakes in the area. The County has Leadville as it's seat and the County was created November 1, 1861. The County is located in the central area of the state.[2]

Lake County’s Public Library’s website has links to records of Lake County’s cemeteries. Interments in the “Old” Leadville Cemetery began in 1877. The Evergreen Cemetery opened up in November of 1879; some graves were moved from the “Old” Leadville Cemetery to the new Evergreen Cemetery. A Catholic cemetery, St. Joseph’s, opened in the mid 1800s. Some graves were moved from the Catholic section of the Evergreen Cemetery to St. Joseph’s. 1877-1879 Old Leadville Cemetery Records:

In 1860, present-day Colorado was enumerated in the Kansas, Nebraska, New Mexico, and Utah Territories. Colorado Territory was created in 1861 and was enumerated as such in the 1870 Census. A state census was taken in 1885 for Colorado.[8] See links listed below.
