Monroe County was created by act of the Mississippi territorial legislature on 29 June 1815 from Washington County and from lands ceded to the state by the Creek Indians. A courthouse fire destroyed all records prior to 1833. County seat: Fort Claiborne (December 1815-1832) and Monroeville (1832-present).
