New Zealand Taxation
Tax records give little genealogical information other than identifying where an ancestor lived. Because tax records are difficult to find, are often unindexed, and give limited information, search them only after you have exhausted other sources.
Only a few taxation records exist for New Zealand, the most important to the genealogist being the returns of freeholders.
Returns of Freeholders. This record was made in October 1882 and was actually a census of land owners. Information in the returns includes names, addresses and occupations of landholders, area and value of land. These returns are held by the Land Purchase Department in New Zealand and are available at the Family History Library. (FHL film 1066521, item 2.)
