Originally named for town of Quinamkot. The Dutch renamed it Nieuw Amstel in 1657 after taking from the Swedes. Tne English captured the town and renamed New Castle. The county was also renamed [[New Castle County, Delaware|New Castle]] County (English Castle is a twist on Dutch Amstel - which is Kaastel.)
