From 1903 to 1979 the Panama Canal Zone was controlled by the United States under the Hay-Bunau-Varilla treaty. From 1979-1999, after the Carter-Torrijos treaty was signed, it was jointly administered by the United States and Panama.[1]

At least two United States federal censuses were taken in this territory.[2]
