Collection Description

Worldwide collection, but with a base in Essex County. The collection includes a rich maritime collection with plates of ships dating from ~1720, transatlantic ship logs, ship registers, ship images, customs records, and records of local mariners. The collection also includes county and local histories, published vital records to 1850, city directories, censuses, tax lists, maps, newspapers, manuscript letters, financial papers, diaries, sermons, church records, militias, hospitals, schools, and municipal governments. Essex County books, manuscripts, and government records such as probate records. 250,000 records have been digitized and are searchable through the library's website.[2]

  • Admissions fees apply to adults, seniors, and students who are not residents of Salem, Mass. See Visit Us.
  • A $25.00 research service is available to the public ($20.00 for members). This covers up to 20 photocopied pages. An order form is available online.
  • Onsite researchers are not allowed to make photocopies; however, they may request that staff make photocopies ($0.50 for printed pages; $1.00 for manuscript pages). There is a 48-hour turnaround time.
