Military Source Birth/Family Information Given Indexing and Comments
Pensions • Birth day, month, year (usually)
• Birth state and city or county (usually)
• Spouse, children (sometimes)
• Parents (seldom)
• Well indexed.
• Only severly disabled soldiers qualified until 1887, when the laws were loosened.
Draft Records • Age as of 1 July 1863
• Place of birth
• Not indexed
• Arranged by Congressional Districts
Veterans Organizations • Birth day, month, year (usually)
• Birth state and city or county (usually)
• Spouse, children (sometimes)
• Parents (seldom)
• The veterans themselves joined these organizations.
Lineage Societies • Birth day, month, year (usually)
• Birth state and city or county (usually)
• Spouse, 1 child (often)
• Parents (seldom)
• Descendants submitted a pedigree and papers to prove relationship and the soldier's service.
Service Records • Birth day, month, year (sometimes)
• Age (usually)
• Other birth or family information (seldom)
• Quite complete and indexed on the Internet.
Regimental Histories • Age at enlistment (often)
• Other birth or family information (sometimes)
• Easy to find, if one is published.
