History

Vince, the principal city of today’s Veneto province, became a republic after the removal of Byzantine control in the 8th century. It became a maritime superpower and enjoyed 1100 years of major influence in the Mediterranean. That came to an end when in 1797, Napoleon invaded the territory of the Venetian Republic. The area was then reverting back and forth between the Austrian and French empires until 1866. In October of 1866, the area finally ended up a possession of Italy.

Because of poor economic conditions, the end of the 19th century and first half of the 20th century saw millions of Venetians leave their homes and move to other parts of the world such as South America, especially Brazil. Others went to Australia, Canada and the United States.
