Washington County was created on 4 June 1800 by the Mississippi territorial legislature. Parent counties were Baldwin and the Mississippi Territory. County seat: McIntosh Bluff (1800-1805), Wakefield (1805-1809), Franklin (1809-1925), Old St. Stephens (1815- 1825), Washington Court House (1825-1842), Barrytown (1842-1847), New St. Stephens (1848-1907), and Chatom (1907-present).
